Neon Snake is a free online snake game in the slither style: you start tiny, eat glowing orbs to grow, and try to make other snakes crash into your body while keeping your own head out of trouble. Rooms hold up to 16 players, there is a room chat with emoji, skins to pick from, and a leaderboard tied to your Cursor Style account. It runs in the browser on any computer or Chromebook - nothing to download.

How to play Neon Snake

  1. Type a nickname, pick a skin and a room - each room shows how many players are inside - and press Play.

  2. Steer with the mouse: the snake follows the pointer. Eat the glowing orbs to grow longer; bigger orbs are worth more, and the golden orb gives +10 at once.

  3. Other snakes die when their head touches any part of your body - so cut across their path, circle them, and never lead with your own head. When a snake dies it leaves its length behind as orbs: collect them fast.

  4. Hold the left mouse button or W to boost. Boosting is faster but burns length, so use it to cut someone off or to escape, not to cruise.

What is in the game

Real multiplayer rooms

Up to 16 snakes per room, live. See who is inside before you join, or watch a room as a spectator.

Room chat and emoji

A chat panel and quick emoji reactions inside the arena, moderated like the Cursor Style chat.

Skins

Neon, striped and glowing skins for your snake - pick one in the lobby.

Leaderboard

Best score, wins and games played, kept on your account. The top 10 is right on this page.

Obstacles and maps

Walls, pillars and mazes on the grid - the arena is not an empty field, and the minimap shows where you are.

Share food

Press Space to drop orbs for a friend who is behind - a small trick that makes team play possible.

Play with friends

Every room has its own link: copy it from the lobby and send it, or invite people straight from the Cursor Style chat - the game shows up in the chat menu, and friends from the chat join with their nickname and avatar already set.

Rooms are small on purpose. Sixteen snakes on one map is enough for a crowded arena and few enough that you can recognise the people you came with.

Tips for a longer snake

  • Early on, avoid everyone. A short snake loses every collision. Eat in the quiet corners until you have some length.
  • Cut off, do not chase. Move across the path a snake is about to take; the head that touches a body dies, so let them come to you.
  • Boost in short bursts. A second of boost to close a gap is worth the length; a long boost just feeds your orbs to whoever is nearby.
  • Circle big snakes. When you are long enough, wrap around a smaller snake and tighten the loop - it has nowhere to go.
  • Watch the minimap. Crowds mean orbs from crashes, and danger. Go there long, leave there short.

A snake game made for Chromebooks

Neon Snake was built by the Cursor Style team for the computers most of our players have: school Chromebooks and ordinary laptops. It is a plain web page on cursor.style - the same site that gives you custom cursors - so it opens wherever the site opens, with nothing to install and no launcher.

The server is authoritative: positions, collisions and scores are computed on our side, which keeps rooms fair even on a slow connection. The client is light enough for a mid-range Chromebook: about 150 kbit/s per player and a few milliseconds of CPU per frame.

Frequently asked questions

Is Neon Snake free?

Yes. All rooms, skins and features are free, and there is nothing to buy inside the game.

Do I need to download anything?

No. The game runs in the browser on this page. No download, no install, no extension required - although with the Cursor Style extension your custom cursor shows in the game too.

Does it work on a Chromebook?

Yes, that is what it was made for. A touchpad works; a mouse makes steering easier. If cursor.style opens on your school Chromebook, the game plays.

How do I play with a friend?

Join the same room. Copy the room link from the lobby and send it, or invite from the Cursor Style chat. Rooms hold up to 16 players.

Why did my snake die?

Your head touched another snake's body, a wall or an obstacle. Only the head is vulnerable: bodies can cross freely, so watch where your head goes, especially while boosting.

Is it safe for kids?

The game and the room chat use the same moderation as the Cursor Style chat, there are no ads inside the arena and no links out. Nicknames are filtered.

Is Neon Snake the same as slither.io?

It is the same kind of game - a multiplayer snake where you grow by eating orbs and win by cutting others off - but it is our own game, with rooms, chat, obstacles and a leaderboard tied to your Cursor Style account.
