Two ways to change a cursor - which one do you need?
System cursor. This is the pointer the operating system draws everywhere: desktop, file manager, every program. Windows lets you swap it for another scheme or your own .cur / .ani files. macOS and ChromeOS do not: they only offer size and colour. Changing it takes a trip through system settings and, on a school or work computer, may be locked by the administrator.
Browser cursor. A web page can ask the browser to show any small image as the cursor - that is how games and design tools get their own pointer. A cursor extension such as Cursor Style does this for every page you open, so the cursor changes on YouTube, Google Docs, Roblox and your school portal, while the desktop stays as it is. It works the same on Windows, Mac, Linux and Chromebook, needs no files and no administrator rights, and switches off in one click.

Step by step, for your system
Menu names below are for Windows 11, Windows 10, current macOS and ChromeOS. Older versions keep the same pages under slightly different names.
In Chrome (any computer)
Open the Chrome Web Store page of Cursor Style and press Add to Chrome. It is free, takes one click and needs no administrator rights. It also works in Edge, Brave and Opera.
Come back to cursor.style and open any collection - anime, games, cute, memes, neon - or search for a character by name.
Press Apply on the cursor you like. It changes on every tab immediately. The box further down this page lets you try one before installing anything.
To change the size, click the extension icon next to the address bar and drag the slider. The same popup holds the On/Off switch and 39 optional trail effects.
The browser cursor shows only inside web pages. Chrome's own pages - the Web Store and chrome:// settings - keep the default cursor, and so does the desktop outside the browser.
Windows 11 and 10
Open Settings (Windows key + I) and go to Bluetooth & devices → Mouse. On Windows 10 it is Devices → Mouse.
Click Additional mouse settings (Windows 10: Additional mouse options on the right). The classic Mouse Properties window opens.
Open the Pointers tab. To use a built-in set, pick one from the Scheme list - Windows Black, Inverted, and the large and extra-large variants.
To use your own cursor, select a role in the Customize list (start with Normal Select, the plain arrow), click Browse… and choose a .cur or .ani file. Repeat for Link Select, the hand. Then Save As… to keep the set as a scheme.
Click Apply, then OK. The pointer changes at once, everywhere in Windows.
Size and colour live somewhere else: Settings → Accessibility → Mouse pointer and touch. There you can pick white, black, inverted or any custom colour and drag the size slider - useful on a big monitor or if the pointer is hard to see.
macOS
Open System Settings from the Apple menu and choose Accessibility in the sidebar.
Click Display, then scroll to the Pointer section.
Drag Pointer size to make it larger, and set Pointer outline colour and Pointer fill colour - a bright fill on a dark outline is the easiest to find on a busy screen.
Turn on Shake mouse pointer to locate so a quick shake enlarges the pointer for a moment whenever you lose it.
macOS has no built-in way to load a custom cursor picture. Third-party tools exist, but they patch system files and break on updates. For a picture cursor most Mac users change it in the browser instead - see the Chrome tab.
Chromebook (ChromeOS)
Click the clock in the corner, open Settings (the gear), then Accessibility in the sidebar.
Open Cursor and touchpad (on older versions: Mouse and touchpad, or Manage accessibility features).
Turn on Show large mouse cursor and pick a Cursor colour. Highlight the mouse cursor when it's moving adds a ring that makes it easier to follow.
For a picture cursor, use the Chrome tab above: a Chromebook is mostly the Chrome browser, so a browser cursor covers almost everything you do on it.
On a school-managed Chromebook the accessibility settings are always available, and Chrome Web Store extensions work whenever the administrator allows them. If the store is blocked for your account, no website can change the cursor.
How to make the cursor bigger or a different colour
Windows: Settings → Accessibility → Mouse pointer and touch - size slider and colour. Mac: System Settings → Accessibility → Display → Pointer. Chromebook: Settings → Accessibility → Cursor and touchpad. All three take effect immediately and never need a restart.
In the browser, the Cursor Style extension has its own size slider under its icon, so a custom cursor can be larger than the system default - handy on a big screen or a classroom projector. Colour is up to the cursor you pick: the Neon and Colored collections were drawn to stand out on any page.
A word about cursor files
If you go the Windows route, download only plain .cur or .ani files, and never a "cursor pack" that comes as an .exe or an installer - that is the classic way adware gets onto a computer. A cursor file is a small image; it should not ask to install anything.
A browser cursor avoids the question entirely: nothing is downloaded, the extension is published on the Chrome Web Store and reviewed by Google, and it only changes the cursor and effects on the pages you open.
If the cursor did not change
- Windows: make sure you pressed Apply in Mouse Properties, and that the file is .cur or .ani - a .png cannot be used as a system cursor. If the Pointers tab is missing or greyed out, the computer is managed by an administrator.
- Mac and Chromebook: only size and colour can change - a picture cursor needs the browser method.
- Chrome: check that the extension is on (click its icon - the switch at the top) and that the page is a normal website, not the Web Store or a chrome:// page. Reload the tab once after installing.
